Achieving My Best Self For The New Year

The New Year always brings forth new goals and resolutions we want to accomplish. On a personal level, I simply want to be the best version of myself- in every aspect of my life. I want to be happier, healthier and more productive than last year. I want to end this year knowing I was 100% committed and gave it my all- which is what we should strive for: Progress not perfection. 

Here are 7 things I'm committed to doing in achieving my best self for the New Year:

 

LIMIT SOCIAL MEDIA

As someone who has battled with depression and anxiety, I constantly have to give myself grace. It's easy to fall into the trap of comparison, especially nowadays with social media. As a blogger, the pressure to create and post picture-perfect content is extremely high, and the competition has become bigger than ever. But I've learned that everyone is fighting their own battle. No one truly knows what goes behind closed doors- even if their Instagram photo shows otherwise. This year I'm limiting my time spent on social media and living my life more offline. 

 

JOIN TOASTMASTERS

This has been one of my goals for the past three years! Although I'm an introvert, I don't consider myself a shy person and can be social without a problem. My problem comes with being the center of attention- as in being put on the spot or giving speeches. As a person who stutters, this can be even more difficult . Even though I no longer feel ashamed of my disfluency, I still struggle with public speaking. I've been asked numerous times to speak at panels and even do segments on live TV, but sadly I’ve turned most of them down. I believe Toastmasters will help with my confidence and communication skills. The goal is to speak fearlessly, not fluently!

READ

I used be obsessed with reading, particularly self-help books. I have a closet filled with books I've purchased over the years but haven't made the time to read yet. This year, I want to make a conscious effort to read at least 30 minutes every night before going to bed. Not only will I be absorbing a wealth of knowledge but hopefully reading more will help me become a better writer. Plus, studies have shown that shutting off all electronics an hour before going to bed helps you sleep better and wake up more refreshed the next morning. Sounds like a win-win to me!

 

DRINK MORE WATER

I'm pretty sure drinking more water is on everyone's list. It took many years to finally learn to enjoy drinking water. My only problem is my consistency. There are days where I drink the recommended number of ounces and other days where I barely drink one full glass. The solution will be to take my water bottle with me at all times. In the past, this has helped me in reaching my water intake goal. I'll also be swamping out sodas and high calorie drinks in favor of water.

NEVER STOP LEARNING

I was never someone who loved school. I admittedly struggled with it, yet I loved learning, if that makes sense. It would take me hours just to complete an assignment. My mind would wander somewhere else or I would procrastinate until the last minute to turn something in. But when it came to researching things I cared for or was passionate about, I could spend hours learning. This year, I want to focus on spending an hour a day on listening to podcasts and reading articles that will help me grow both professionally and personally. 

 

BE MORE MINDFUL

This topic is one that interests me the most. Being mindful of my thoughts and actions towards myself and others is something I want to work on more. I want to be more present and practice patience. Foster the friendships and relationships I currently have and build new ones. Go back to yoga and meditation. These two exercises always make me feel at peace and bring a sense of self awareness that in return, I feel, makes me a better person. I want to be more mindful with my eating habits as well. I'm guilty of sometimes eating just to eat. I want to nourish my body with good food not junk. I want to increase my grateful walks as well- which is essentially going for quick walk around my neighborhood and reflecting on all my blessings and future goals.

TAKE CARE OF MY GUT

I've struggled with keeping my digestive system regulated for as long as I could I remember, which is why taking care of my gut is extremely important to my health.
