Finding Your Balance. Four Easy Ways To Improve Your Day

Being kind to our bodies not only consists of exercising and eating well. Keeping hydrated and making sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water is vital to our health. I never realized how little amount I was drinking until I started keeping track of my water intake. There were days where I was lucky to have one glass in my system. Since I work from home, there are days where I don’t even step outside the whole day. Getting some fresh air and changing your scenery will not only give you a nice little break but also some mental clarity. Whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed, I take a quick 5 min walk around my neighborhood and I come back feeling refreshed! It’s amazing how only 5 mins can relax you plus it’s a great way to sneak in a few sips of your water. Win-win for sure!

EAT A BALANCED DIET

Getting the proper nutrition is important for your overall health. Try to incorporate a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and fewer processed foods. Eat whole grains and high-fiber foods and choose leaner cuts of meat, fish, and poultry.
 
Eating healthy doesn't mean you have to forgo your favorite glass of wine or a piece of chocolate cake now and then. The key is moderation. Eating a balanced diet will help you maintain an ideal weight for your height, which is important because being overweight can lead to a number of illnesses.

 
MANAGE STRESS

Mental health is just as important as your physical health. No matter what stage of her life, daughter, mother, or grandmother, a woman often wears many hats and deals with a lot of pressure and stress. If not managed properly, stress can have significant health consequences, from infertility to higher risks of depression, anxiety and heart disease.  
You can manage stress with exercise, relaxation techniques, or meditation.
 

EXERCISE

Women need a mix of cardio and resistance or weight-bearing exercise at least three to five times a week. Aerobic exercises (walking, swimming, jogging, bicycling, dancing), which can be done outside of a gym, are great ways to get your body moving while at the same time having fun. Exercise promotes good self-image as well, which is important to a woman's mental health.


DOCTOR VISITS

Don't skip your annual checkup. Prevention or taking care of any illness or disease early on can make a big difference. Make sure you get a Pap test to check for cervical cancer every three years if you are 21 or older. If you are 30-65, you can get both a Pap test and HPV test every five years. If you have certain risk factors, your doctor may recommend more-frequent Pap tests, regardless of your age. Older than 65, women may be able to stop testing if their doctor says they are low risk. In any case,  if you are sexually active, always use protection and get tested for any STDs.

 
Family Planning

Getting to decide when, if ever, and under what circumstances to have kids means having more freedom to pursue educational, personal, and professional goals. Having kids is a blessing but also requires a lot of responsibility. Being financially and emotionally stable and ready to support the child would be the desired setting when starting a family.

A method to decrease your chances of an unwanted pregnancy after unprotected sex or a birth control failure is by taking the Plan B One-Step pill.

Making Health a Priority with Nokia Body+ Scale

At the beginning of the year, I made it a mission to make health a priority in my life. I've always struggled to maintain a consistent weight. My weight seems to always fluctuate between 5-15lbs. The constant yo-yo is not good for my body or self-esteem.

HAVE PATIENCE

When it comes to losing weight, it really is a marathon, not a sprint. Most of us would love to lose 20lbs in 2 weeks, but that is neither realistic or healthy. The road to success is challenging and painful at times, but the reward at the end is worth it. Making slow positive changes is better than doing a complete 180 and giving up after a week. Know that weight loss will take time, but if you stick to it, the weight will stay off longer, and your mind and body will thank you for it. Instead of setting a big number goal, set small attainable weekly goals. I'd rather focus on losing 1-2lbs a week then stress about 30 lbs in a few months. Makes the journey less overwhelming. 

 

KNOW YOURSELF

As someone who has been on countless diets and has failed most of them, the best advice I can give is to figure out what works for you. We're all different; there is no one size fits all for weight loss.

For me, keeping track of my food intake with points, not eating after 7 pm, increasing my water intake, exercising 3x/week and limiting my social outings is the best way I lose weight. The social aspect makes the most impact on my diet. I know my self-control is not the greatest- especially in the beginning stages of my weight loss journey, so I limit my social interactions. It might seem extreme, but going out usually means drinking alcoholic beverages and eating unhealthy high-calorie food. I'd rather avoid those tempting situations until the second month, where my willpower is stronger because I know I'll likely cheat. Then I slowly start attending events or get-togethers, always being mindful of what I consume though.

Research a program or healthy diet that works well for your personality and lifestyle- this will help you successfully lose weight.

 

STAY CONSISTENT

With anything in life, consistency is key! I know it's easier said than done because I struggle with this concept as well. But it really comes down to consistently making better choices. Only eating salads and living at the gym is also not the answer. You need to learn to balance and practice moderation. I love the 80/20 rule, where you eat healthy 80% of the time and the other 20% you're not as strict. This rule helps you stay more consistent in achieving your weight loss goal because it makes eating healthy more attainable.

 

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

Stepping on the scale can be a scary and daunting task, but in my opinion, it shouldn't be. You can't plan or set a goal if you don't know where you are exactly. The number on the scale represents your starting point. From there you can then determine your weekly goals and plan accordingly.

Achieving My Best Self For The New Year

The New Year always brings forth new goals and resolutions we want to accomplish. On a personal level, I simply want to be the best version of myself- in every aspect of my life. I want to be happier, healthier and more productive than last year. I want to end this year knowing I was 100% committed and gave it my all- which is what we should strive for: Progress not perfection.

LIMIT SOCIAL MEDIA

As someone who has battled with depression and anxiety, I constantly have to give myself grace. It's easy to fall into the trap of comparison, especially nowadays with social media. As a blogger, the pressure to create and post picture-perfect content is extremely high, and the competition has become bigger than ever. But I've learned that everyone is fighting their own battle. No one truly knows what goes behind closed doors- even if their Instagram photo shows otherwise. This year I'm limiting my time spent on social media and living my life more offline. 

 

JOIN TOASTMASTERS

This has been one of my goals for the past three years! Although I'm an introvert, I don't consider myself a shy person and can be social without a problem. My problem comes with being the center of attention- as in being put on the spot or giving speeches. As a person who stutters, this can be even more difficult . Even though I no longer feel ashamed of my disfluency, I still struggle with public speaking. I've been asked numerous times to speak at panels and even do segments on live TV, but sadly I’ve turned most of them down. I believe Toastmasters will help with my confidence and communication skills. The goal is to speak fearlessly, not fluently!

READ

I used be obsessed with reading, particularly self-help books. I have a closet filled with books I've purchased over the years but haven't made the time to read yet. This year, I want to make a conscious effort to read at least 30 minutes every night before going to bed. Not only will I be absorbing a wealth of knowledge but hopefully reading more will help me become a better writer. Plus, studies have shown that shutting off all electronics an hour before going to bed helps you sleep better and wake up more refreshed the next morning. Sounds like a win-win to me!

 

DRINK MORE WATER

I'm pretty sure drinking more water is on everyone's list. It took many years to finally learn to enjoy drinking water. My only problem is my consistency. There are days where I drink the recommended number of ounces and other days where I barely drink one full glass. The solution will be to take my water bottle with me at all times. In the past, this has helped me in reaching my water intake goal. I'll also be swamping out sodas and high calorie drinks in favor of water.

NEVER STOP LEARNING

I was never someone who loved school. I admittedly struggled with it, yet I loved learning, if that makes sense. It would take me hours just to complete an assignment. My mind would wander somewhere else or I would procrastinate until the last minute to turn something in. But when it came to researching things I cared for or was passionate about, I could spend hours learning. This year, I want to focus on spending an hour a day on listening to podcasts and reading articles that will help me grow both professionally and personally. 

 

BE MORE MINDFUL

This topic is one that interests me the most. Being mindful of my thoughts and actions towards myself and others is something I want to work on more. I want to be more present and practice patience. Foster the friendships and relationships I currently have and build new ones. Go back to yoga and meditation. These two exercises always make me feel at peace and bring a sense of self awareness that in return, I feel, makes me a better person. I want to be more mindful with my eating habits as well. I'm guilty of sometimes eating just to eat. I want to nourish my body with good food not junk. I want to increase my grateful walks as well- which is essentially going for quick walk around my neighborhood and reflecting on all my blessings and future goals.

5 Simple Ways To Relax And Recharge

WRITE:

One of my favorite things to do is write, especially in my Five Minute Journal- and all it takes, you guessed it, 5 mins!

I write down three things I'm thankful for first thing in the morning, as well as three intentions I have for the day. I noticed that focusing more on my blessings rather than the things I can't control, helps me improve my outlook for the day. MEDITATE:

Most people are under the impression that you need to set a lot of time aside or have a special space to meditate. Although you certainly can, just 5 mins a day can also be just as beneficial. Whenever I need to take a mental break, I stop whatever I'm doing, put a quick timer on and just close my eyes. It's hard to believe that only 5 mins can change your whole outlook, but it can.

 

TAKE A GRATITUDE WALK:

I love walking! Whether for exercise or exploring a new place when I travel. There is nothing like breathing in fresh air. Taking a quick stroll around the block will deliver the benefits of alone time, physical activity, and a few minutes to gather your thoughts! I love reflecting and going over my goals during my little walk break.

LISTEN TO MUSIC:

Studies have shown that listening to soothing music can relax your mind and body. But in my opinion, listening to any kind of music you like works just fine. Your favorite song can be a quick fix for a bad or stress out mood.

 

TAKE A COFFEE BREAK:

5 Easy Ways To Feel Better During Your Period

We've all been there. That one week every month where you have to deal with the painful cramps, headaches, swollen breasts and backaches. This can be frustrating and uncomfortable but when you are prepared both physically and mentally for your period, it can be much easier to deal with.

Here are 5 easy ways to feel better during your period.

Exercise:

As much as you don't want to, doing some type of physical activity will actually help alleviate some of the pain. Exercise triggers your brain to release endorphins, your body's natural pain reliever. Easy exercises like stretching, yoga, walking or swimming helps increase blood flow, which cuts down on cramping. Sitting still can actually make you feel worse. I like to take 30 mins nature walks around my neighborhood. Not only does it help soothe the pain but it also takes me mind off of the fact that I'm on my period.

 

Stay Hydrated:

Even though you're feeling bloated, drinking water will eliminate the water building up in your body. Drink eight to ten 8-ounce glasses of water throughout the day. If your body is dehydrated, it might make you feel more sluggish and make the cramping worse. If you’re on-the-go, be sure to carry a water bottle with you. This will help you stay hydrated throughout your busy day.

Eat Good For You Foods:

A week before my period starts, I always crave and want to eat anything and everything in sight. Afterwards I feel worse than I did before. When you eat enough of the right foods, you will feel physically and emotionally better. Having healthy snacks such as fruits and vegetables readily available helps you steer away from the foods that can make your period symptoms worse, such as junk food, chocolate and salty snacks.

 

Take Pain Medication:

I usually get cramping the day before and the first day of my period. Some months the pain isn't too bad I can go on without taking any medication. Others, I want to cry from the unbearable cramps. For those days, I take an over the counter medication and in 15 mins my pain goes away. Talk to your physician if over the counter painkillers do not work and you continue to have severe pain during cramps.

9 Tips for Healthier and Younger Looking Skin

We're always at a constant battle to keep our skin looking and feeling our best. From the latest beauty product to the newest (and sometimes crazy) anti-aging fad- we all want beautiful youthful skin.

Proper skincare and healthy lifestyle choices can help delay the natural aging process and prevent various skin problems.

Here are 9 tips you can easily incorporate to that will help you in achieving glowing skin:

 

Drink Water:

We all know the benefits of drinking water. Yet most of us struggle with drinking the required minimum 8 glasses a day. I know I do. Water intake is extremely important for our overall health. It aids in digestion, circulation, and absorption of nutrients. Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining the optimum skin moisture and essential nutrients to the skin cells. The best way for me to remember to drink water, is to carry my water bottle at all times. If I see it, I’m prone to drink it.

Use Sunscreen

The sun is a great source for vitamin D. However, the ideal time for catching some rays is only between 7am to 9am. After that time, the UV rays are too strong and can damage the texture of your skin and may cause skin cancer. Using sunscreen is a must! That is the one product that you can't afford to leave the house without.

 

Daily Dose of Vitamin C and Biotin: 

As an antioxidant, Vitamin C helps neutralize harmful free radicals in cells. Biotin, as most of us have probably read before, supports beautiful healthy hair, skin and nails. You can take these supplements in either pill or gummy form.

Detoxification:

Remove Makeup:

I’ve been guilty of being too tired to take my make up off before going to sleep. But going to bed without removing your makeup is one of the worst things you can do for the complexion of your skin.  At night, the skin’s most important function is to renew itself. Wearing makeup and foundation at night disrupts and prevents the renewal process, causing damage and negative effects to your skin, such as clogged pores, wrinkles, and breakouts. Also, just as bad: Not properly cleaning your make-up brushes. Make sure you clean your brushes at least every two weeks. The last thing your face needs is oil, dirt or bacteria from your dirty brushes. No thank you!

Up until recently, I never had a consistent skincare routine. I normally would just wash my face in the morning and night and only shower with soap.

Increasing the circulation by dry brushing the skin may reduce the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite is toxic material accumulated in your body’s fat cells so by using a dry skin brushing technique can help break down unwanted toxins.

Dry body brushing also helps shed dead skin cells and encourages new cell renewal, which results in smoother and brighter skin. Best time to dry brush is before your shower because it helps your skin to absorb nutrients by eliminating clogged pores and get you ready for moisturizing.

 How To Dry Brush: 

•Start on dry skin before bathing.

•Work in gentle circular, upward motions, then longer, smoother strokes.

•Always begin at the ankles in upwards movements towards the heart - the lymphatic fluid flows through the body towards the heart, so it's important that you brush in the same direction.

•Your back is the only exception to the preceding rule; brush from the neck down to the lower back. 

•After you've finished with the ankles, move up to the lower legs, thighs, stomach, back and arms. Be cautious of softer and sensitive skin around the chest and breasts, and never brush over inflamed skin, sores, or sun-burnt skin.

•Ensure you shower to wash away the dead skin cells and impurities.

•Tip: alternating temperatures in the shower from hot to cold will further invigorate the skin and stimulate blood circulation, bring more blood to the outer layers of the skin.
